Mathew’s brother swimming with nurse sharks.

This post will be much shorter than the last scuba post, but it’s fun to talk about. For context, my brother and I recently traveled to Belize to get our scuba certifications. After our dives, our instructor would take us to a particular place called Shark Ray Cove. Historically, fisherman would dump their left-over bait in these waters. Naturally, the nurse shark population caught on and began to gather around the boats when they’d appear. To the sharks, the sound of the boat motors are like dinner calls. Nurse sharks in nature are very docile. They’ll only attack if seriously provoked. With the sharks distracted by food, swimmers can jump in and get a close and undisturbed look. Technically, we were told to keep our distance from the sharks, but how could we? The chance to swim with sharks doesn’t exactly come around every day. My brother snapped a great photo next to the swarm of hungry sharks. They’d swim above, under, around, and even through our legs. Luckily for us, we weren’t their targets. We got to reach out and touch passing sharks! How cool is that!!
